@cat Co-Working Space in Georgetown (Penang)

At the moment I`m for a few days in Malaysia. On Monday this week I arrived here in Georgetown on the Penang island. Georgetown in Penang is popular tourist destination for the backpacker who passes through as well as for those needing to do a Thailand visa run.

Most Southeast Asian bound digital nomads head to Bali, Chiang Mai or Saigon. I decided to try somewhere different and spent a few days in Georgetown where everyone speaks English and the food is some of the best in the world.

Digital Nomad Community in Penang

This was the weakest point of Penang in my opinion. Although it was partially my fault for not being proactive enough there isn’t a large expat scene. At my times in the co-working space there was only ever a handful of people. Everybody was focused on working on there projects, so it was hard to socialize.

@CAT PENANG

In May 2016 the Co-working Space @CAT opens. Its a huge nice furnished place. Its subsidized by the Government to promote local startups.

While I was there, there wasn’t never to many people in the office at a time. So it was always easy to grab a desk and get your work done. The internet speed isn’t the greatest, but for me it was enough to get my work done and thats what is important for me.

What do I have to spend for this co-working place?

If you are okey with working only at normal office hours here (9.00 am – 6.00 pm) you can get a daily pass for 25 RM or the monthly pass for 120 RM. If you like to get 24/7 access you ned to get the 200 RM GOLD PASS. (data from Jan 2017)

My PRO´s and CON´s about this co-working place

Pro:

  • cheep
  • silent
  • komfortable chairs
  • free coffee

Con:

  • only accessable in the office hours (9.00 am – 6.00 pm)
  • less social than I like
  • internetspeed was just “okey”
